UK Palm Oil Company Ranks 2nd in SPOTT assessment

Palm Oil Company New Britain Oils ranks 2nd in SPOTT assessment

Palm oil company New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) has retained second place in the world ranking of palm oil producers and traders by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), with a score of 89.9%.

Transparency of palm oil companies

SPOTT is the Sustainability Policy Transparency Toolkit developed by ZSL. The independent scorecard is produced to assess the transparency of the palm oil industry and encourage companies to improve their reporting systems so as an industry, we can better monitor unsustainable practices.

In 2019, a record number of 99 companies were assessed – a vast increase on the 70 companies who participated in the previous year. The score is based on information from the public disclosure of each companies’ policies and commitments to environmental, social and governance practices.This includes 181 key indicators among 10 categories such as pledges to no deforestation, reporting to the RSPO standards and availability of High Conservation Value (HCV) assessments.

This is the fifth consecutive year that New Britain Palm Oil Limited have ranked in the top three, proving their continued commitment to transparency at the plantations. Sime Darby Oils parent company, Sime Darby Plantation (SDP) also ranked 12 out of the 99 major palm oil companies surveyed with an overall score of 72.1%. SDP was the largest plantation company by land area to be included in the SPOTT assessment.
